General:
Bangkirai remains one of the best-selling decking woods in Germany – and for good reason: decking boards made of Bangkirai wood combine the positive properties of tropical wood species with an excellent price-performance ratio.
Bangkirai (Yellow Balau) hardwood originates from Southeast Asia. It is very strong, robust, and contains natural substances that protect it from rot. Therefore, these decking boards require relatively little maintenance. Bangkirai wood has a warm color that exudes a wonderful sense of coziness.
Bangkirai wood tends to bleed, especially during the initial weathering phase (this is the term used for the leaching of colored wood components). Therefore, we advise you to protect surrounding building components as needed. This will prevent, for example, stones or facades from suffering discoloration that is difficult or impossible to remove later.
Bangkirai wood has a relatively high tendency to expand and contract. However, this isn't a problem if you take it into account during installation. Lay the decking boards with a gap of approximately 4.5–8 mm. This gives the wood enough room to expand; conversely, it prevents excessively large gaps from forming when it shrinks.
Also typical of Bangkirai wood is the occurrence of so-called pinholes or insect holes, which, however, do not affect the quality and durability of the wood. These are feeding tunnels (pinholes) made by insects that infest the living trunk but die immediately after felling. Therefore, there are absolutely no living insects left in the wood upon delivery.
Surface:
The selected profile determines the surface of the decking boards that will be visible later. You usually have the choice between a smooth, finely grooved, or coarsely grooved profile. Which one you choose depends on your personal taste. A smooth surface is no more slippery than a grooved one and also has the advantage that the boards dry faster and are easier to clean, as water runs off to all sides and moss and dirt cannot collect in the grooves. When installing the deck, you can choose either side as the visible surface, meaning you can select between two sides if you don't like one side due to pinholes or color variations. Another major advantage of a smooth board is the possibility of sanding the wood. This allows you to easily repair minor damage that may occur over the years or even sand the entire deck if it has become weathered or grayed. A smooth surface also gives your wooden deck an elegant parquet-like appearance.
Construction:
Despite its strength, Bangkirai wood is easy to work with using carbide tools. If you're planning to build your own wooden deck, this type of wood is an excellent choice. For fastening, be sure to use stainless steel (V2A or V4A). Standard galvanized materials can react with some of the wood's natural components. This can lead to unsightly discoloration and dark streaks on the wood that are difficult or impossible to remove. For concealed fastenings (clips or brackets), please use stainless steel screws.
As with all hardwoods, we strongly recommend pre-drilling the holes for fastening. This relieves the tension in the wood caused by the screws and prevents splitting and cracking.
Care:
To care for your wooden deck, regularly sweep the boards and oil them once or twice a year (spring and autumn). The oil saturates the wood fibers and reduces water absorption, thus preventing the wood from swelling and shrinking. This helps prevent cracking, which can occur, especially in summer, due to strong temperature fluctuations. If a deck has been newly laid, it should be left to weather for 3-4 weeks before oiling. This allows the wood's pores to open and the oil to be released, enabling the wood to absorb the oil more effectively.
If necessary, use a wood brightener or deck cleaner. For moss and algae growth, we recommend cleaning with a special green growth remover. Please do not use a wire brush to scrub the boards; instead, use a soft scrub brush or a stiff brush. After cleaning, we recommend treating the wooden deck with a pigmented deck oil. This will delay graying and help your deck boards retain their natural wood color for longer.
Bangkirai decking boards are classified as durability class 2, graded secondary grade. The visible side is finely grooved and coarsely ribbed. The dimensions are 25 mm thick and 145 mm wide. The color is light brown.
